Jazz Ensemble Information:

We currently offer two big band sections and one jazz combo section:

Big bands (MUS 46)

• Monday 4-6:30 PM: This is the Concert Jazz Band. This is the more advanced ensemble focusing on rehearsing and performing a wide variety of jazz styles.
• Monday 7-9:30 PM: The Studio Jazz Band delves deep into the fundamentals of jazz and improvisation, fostering a strong foundation for aspiring jazz musicians. This ensemble caters to intermediate players seeking to refine their craft.

*Both classes are also offered as community sections which are free upon enrollment.

Audition requirements (15min)

• Scales: Play a minimum of 3 major scales major and minor scales. Play common jazz-related modes (e.g., Dorian, Bebop, blues scale) at a moderate tempo.
• Sight-reading: Be ready to sight read a short jazz excerpt (melody and solis).
• Prepared piece: Prepare a short jazz solo (standard) that demonstrates your technical proficiency and improvisational skills. A speaker will be provided for backing tracks if needed.
